Santa Rosa de Copan

By Connected Horizons

This is the first town we visited in Honduras! After having crossed the border of El Salvador at El Poy earlier today and having found a blocked road because of the political protests (more and more common in these days), we have finally reached Santa Rosa de Copan.

Luckily, the aim of the protest was to simply stop vehicles and so we managed to cross through it in Ocotepeque but here we are now: strolling around the streets of SRDC. For tonight, we managed to find the Hotel Escalón, a somewhat inexpensive and centrally located hotel featuring a great common area which overlooks the city rooftops. The owner is very funny and always ready to help you out. We would definitely recommend this place long enough!

Santa Rosa de Copán is one of the safest towns in Honduras and its streets are simply fascinating. The Plaza Central, just in front of the Cathedral, is the perfect place to relax on a bench and have a warm handmade tamales from one of the many street-sellers. Th restaurants are pretty expensive here (or at least much more than expected) and there are not many other options, but at least strolling around in search for the right restaurant is a good way to explore the city.

The owner of the hotel recommend us to “climb” up the Cerrito, a lookout point where you can enjoy the city views from above and so we decide to follow the advice. After a good number of blocks, a couple of parks and a smoothie bar, we eventually find the beginning of the stairs that lead up to the “mirador”. In reality the walk up is pretty easy but… the views from above are pretty poor; you can kinda of see the city but there are so many trees covering the view that it feels like looking at an uncompleted puzzle. At least the place is quite nice to have a relaxed chat!

There’s not really a lot to do in Santa Rosa (apart from visiting the Mercado Santa Teresa) and so a couple of days later we decide to keep going and head toward Copan Ruinas. Apparently here there are the best ruins of the country! During our stay in the hotel, we also met two super funny Salvadorians, Eduardo y Jaime, who tomorrow are going to give us a lift to the town on their way to work. What a luck for such a place where doing hitchhiking seems to be very hard. ¡Nobody ever really stop!
