Comayagua Time

By Connected Horizons

We decide to finally leave Los Naranjos, a small village on Lake Yojoa, and keep following toward the south: next destination Comayagua. The bus that connects Los Naranjos to Tegucigalpa (and stops in Comayagua) passes through town at 6:20am, leaving you the time to enjoy a beautiful sunset from the bus stop. Once the bus arrives, we sleepily board and from our seats in the back we observe the gorgeous landscapes speeding by. Eventually, after a couple of bumpy hours, at 9am we safely “dock” in Comayagua’s bus station.

Still sleepy but this time with the weight of our backpackers, we walk for a good 15min until we reach the town center or in other words where the Parque Central and Cathedral Las Mercedes are found. Today, since we its still relatively early we decide giving a shot and spend a bit more time finding the right & cheap accomodation to stay. Although we spend sometime jumping from hostel to hostel the result end up being pretty poor: everything seems expensive! At least, spending an hour at the Restaurante Guanasco (their terrace is beautiful) its not quite the worst punishment!

Eventually we find something: El Hotel LiberteƱo. For just 300L per night, this “hotel” give us a very basic but incredibly well-located room. We’re just a block from Parque Central! Would we suggest the hotel? NOOOOOO! Unfortunately, the staff is incredibly rude, the rooms are not just basic but very bad-kept and the bathrooms well… near to indian standards.

Just after leaving the backpacks down, we head toward the central park and start looking for the Casa de Cultura in which we’ve been told they can give us information about what to do around here. The super nice staff tell us that around here there’s not too much to see and after a couple more minutes of talking they also tell us that we’re more than welcome to visit the costumes & traditions exhibition set in the next room. All in all the exhibition is quite alright but in less than 10min we’re already back on the road with our newly received city map looking for the next place to go.

The Cathedral Las Mercedes and the adjacent Plaza Central are a great area to have a walk around; there are small bars, some nice-looking shops, people chilling in the sun and others just gossiping on the latest tourists passing by. Around the city there are also several other churches which can be included in a relatively short self-guided walking tour. The Archaeology museums is just next to the city hall and just next to the two you can also find another ver nice plaza to relax for a bit.

Although it doesn’t really offers many activities, Comayagua has a gorgeous historic center perfect for having a stroll and enjoy some people-viewing while sipping some nice coffee in a bar. QUICK TIP: Eating a waffle on the second floor of the cafe Tio Juan which overlooks the whole plaza & cathedral is a must-do. Unfortunately, today the time passd quite quick and now it’s already time to head back to our “hotel”…let’s hope to sleep a bit!

And next destination: Isla del Tigre!
