#1 The mystery of the green buses
If you are wild enough to venture and use public buses you’ll also have to be brave enough to stop them! In fact, in India there is little info on where buses are going and at what time they are passing (in most towns apart from big cities). The only option you’ll have left is to raise your hand when waiting for one and ask the controller, he’ll be like a guide for you.
#2 Be sure to have some cash while traveling to more secluded areas
Around the area of Munnar and Thekkady, we kinda struggled to find a bank or an exchange that didn’t charged us ridiculous extras and few were the places accepting international credit cards.
#3 Always double-check
As you’ll start venturing around India you’ll understand that scams, tricks and frauds are a daily routine for a lot of people when seeing tourists. If you need some information asking is absolutely fine, indians are super helpful but remember to ask to a good number of people before believing something.
#4 Make sure about the distance in km between places you wanna go
This happened to be a blessing for us. Knowing distance in-between place we wanted go made us quickly understand people that were lying to us, trying to charge us more than what was supposed to; especially if you’re planning in taking a lot of tuk-tuks !
#5 Only drink sealed water
Nowadays in India, when you buy water even from the grubbiest shop it will come with the factory seal on the top of the cap. This is good ! Sometimes could happen that the seal isn’t there as it is a different brand of water and in that case CHECK THE CAP ! If it looks like it has been touched, modified or just doesn’t look right, don’t drink the water ! It might save you the hassle of getting sick !!!
#6 Haggle on everything
In India, like many other countries people are used to bargain on pretty much everything that can be bought, even hotel rooms !!! In shops you might wanna start thinking that the price they say to you is at least double the amount of what you would have to pay for it.
#7 Remember to ask no-spicy food
The amount of chilly indian people use in their cuisine is something unbelievable for us rest of the world. Whereas some of the people like us enjoy a little bit of spice in their food, the indian food (although delicious) most of the times is overtaken by chilly. This is not always written in the menu so if you want something less spicy (still challenging) just say the moment you order your food ! Might save your tongue !
If you like it, pin it!
