Photojournal: 10 Shots of Guatemala

By Connected Horizons

Wandering around Guatemala for about a month was a great experience full of opportunities to bring memories back home through the viewfinder. From the huge metropolis of Guatemala City to the little lakeside towns of lake Atitlan, every corner was a street-photography heaven. Don’t like street-photography? Well, just hike a couple of hours up to the top of a volcano and the landscapes will blow you off!

Here are some shots about what Guatemala meant for us that Max took while travelling around this beautiful country.

1. Traveler’s view
It is when you’re traveling on a bus that you really feel the marked difference between the people seating with you and the one outside the bus. Two different worlds separated by just a single door of an old bluebird bus.

2. Love at work
This butcher couple was in perfect harmony. They were laughing, smiling at clients but most importantly take care that the other half would not get hurt while doing the jobs.

3. Solitary mornings of a heron
Every morning at sunrise just in front of our house in Lake Atitlan, this heron used to fly over a bunch of dead trees right in the water. It was alone all the time and when the last ray of sun was starting to illuminate the lake, it would just fly away until the next day.

4. A New World to discover
Newborns look at the world from a different perspective. They’re not in a rush cause they know something new could always lay behind the corner.

5. Misty Mornings
Hiking up a path, reaching the top and seeing the cold of the night playing with the coming warmth of the day into what we know as misty mornings.

6. On top of the World
Climbing the 3.772m of Volcano Santa Maria and looking down to see the small Santiaguito erupting is another beautiful show of nature.

7. Traditions & Good Luck
A different country also means different traditions and lifestyles. In certain sacred places, offering a lamb as a sacrifice to the gods is a way to make sure health and luck are gonna be with you for the year to come.

8. Entertaining the next generation
Festivities are always a great way for clowns & mimes to show their abilities in entertaining an audience of young minds. Having a laugh is a great way to get away from the daily routine.

9. Waiting for her mother
Being able to raise a family can be difficult while being a lonely mother and having to work on the street every day. Instead of going to school, kids are sometimes brought along on the streets to have a little taste of what working means.

10. The End of the Journey
While travelling you get to a place, you visit it and then after sometime you leave to repeat the same routine somewhere else. Would you not be curious to understand why someone end up in the same bus where it all started?
