Cycling around Baños: Ruta de Las Cascadas

By Connected Horizons

One of the best activities to do on your own in the small city of Baños is cycling on the Waterfalls Route a.k.a Ruta de Las Cascadas, a stretch of mostly downhill paved road that starts from town and follows the Rio Pastaza until Rio Verde. Even though this route can be done as a part of chiva tours, renting a bike for just 5$/day and cycling your way is definitely the most enjoyable option. And don’t worry, at the last waterfall called Pailon del Diablo there will be trucks to take you (and your bicycle) back up the hill for just 2$!

Distance: 18km | Cost: 9$

1# Cascada Agoyan
The waterfall is located just off the main road just after the Agoyan dam. Here you can take a gondola over it or even do zipline.

2# Cascada Agollan
Very thin but crazy tall waterfall that can be seen from one of the lookout points on the side of the road

3# Cascada El Manto de la Novia
Nice waterfall that can be seen from the bicycle path. Plenty of ziplining, suspension bridge and other various adventure junkie activities.

4# Cascada La Piedra
Less impressive waterfall than the previous ones with no activities around. Can be seen from the bicycle path only.

5# Cascada El Pailon del Diablo
The biggest waterfall of the whole route and the only one where is possible to get close to it. There’s a privately owned path (2$/pp) that leads to the waterfall, a suspension bridge and even a cave leading right behind the middle bit of the waterfall. The entrance to the path is surrounded by some kind of tourist area where you can find restaurants, bars, shops and much more.
TIP: Make sure to bring along a rain jacket if you want to visit the waterfall up close.
