Happy birthday, Nicaragua. I drank a toast in the best rum in the world, Flor de Caña Extra Seco. Mixed with Coke, it was called a Nica-libre, and after a few glasses I was ready to take on the salsa champions and knock them dead. I went outside to dance. The Jaguar Smile - Salman Rushdie

When describing Nicaragua everybody agrees on two things: is cheap and there’s a lot to do. In fact, on top of being the most backpacking-friendly country of Latin America (maybe racing for the first place with Bolivia), it also offers an incredible variety of activities for all tastes.

Walk, swim and do cliff-jumping from inside the Somoto Canyon, a beautiful natural attraction located just next to the Honduran border. Still off-the-beaten-track, it is worth going the extra mile to spend a couple of days wandering the place!

Learn about the Sandinistas and the history of the country by strolling around the city of Esteli. Here you’ll find war-heroes museums, monuments, park dedicated to independence and much much more to understand the past of this beautiful place.

Do some nature hiking in the Selva Negra to see monkeys and enjoy some birdwatching in the middle of the jungle. And don’t forget to swing by Jinotega to get a real feeling of traditional Nicaragua and chances are you’re even gonna see a sloth sleeping in the village’s park.

Head to the city of Leon, capital of trekking, to organize some of the most beautiful volcano trekkings you’ll ever do. Check out the multiday camp & trek to the Volcano El Hoyo for something out of this world!

Explore the huge colonial city of Granada and its beautiful surroundings that could keep you busy for a long time. An active volcano (Masaya), a beautiful crater lake (Laguna de Apoyo) and plenty of artisan markets to feast your eyes on!

Head over to Ometepe Island to spend some relaxed time away from the busy city life. Whether you wanna climb the Maderas/Concepcion or simply relaxed on the beaches Ometepe has got you.

Everywhere you’ll go in Nicaragua we’re sure there’s gonna be something waiting for you to do there. Even if you’ll decide staying long time, it’s going to be hard to visit even half of the country. At the end of the day, there’s so much good stuff to see that you’ll need to buy a new camera to take it all in!
