Roadtrip in Quintana Roo: Day 2

By Connected Horizons

Discovering the ruins of Cobá…

Good morning everyone! Our second day of roadtrip starts with an early wake up to avoid all crowds and be able to visit the beautiful ruins of Cobá tourist-free. We leave the house at 7am and in just 45min, as the sun starts to light up the jungle around us, we manage to get in front of the gate of the ruins. In all honesty, the drive is very nice and you also get the chance to see the Coba Lagoon, close to the archaeological site.

Thankfully, waking up early was worth the effort: we were within the first few people (maybe 5 people altogether?) entering. As gates open up right on the clock at 8am, we fly toward the big attraction of the place the Nohoch Mul pyramid. Amazingly enough, said pyramid is one of the highest climbable pyramid in central america! Needless to say that the breathtaking views from the top and the complete silence give the place that little bit of magic that Chichen-Itza has lost over the years. We’re indeed the first to enjoy the first rays of sun hitting the top!

Since the ruins are spread over a very large area, there’s the possibility to rent a bikefor the day just next to the entrance. Having a bike is not really a “must-do” (in fact we enjoyed a lot having a relaxed walk around) but since all complexes (whether small or big) are inter-connected by well-kept dirt roads, renting a bike or a bici-tour would be a faster way to visit the place. Be aware, going with the bicycle can be nice but it will be difficult to enjoy the surrounding nature while speeding past most things; while walking we saw several coatis, birds and much more that bicycle people have simply not noticed passing by.

After a couple of hours walking around, we realise that differently from Chichen Itza here the ruins are 100% completely immersed in nature with plants, trees and flowers just englobing Coba into a unique mix of breathtaking nature and crazy-interesting history.
