A short stay in Panama City

By Connected Horizons

Panama City is an interesting mix between modern and past history. Whereas the business area known as Obarrio is nothing but skyscrapers, malls and offices, the old city center, known as Casco Viejo, is full of beautiful alleys, coloured houses and buildings of a time long gone.

Finding accomodation just outside the city center in tranquil areas such as Parque Omar, is not a bad way to be away from the chaos but still be only a 3-4$ taxi ride (or Uber) from Obarrio.

Having a walk in this part of the city surrounded by towering skyscrapers and huge malls might not quite feel like being in central america but if you’re looking for some cheap shopping make sure to swing by. Some great options to refill your backpack of useful stuff can be Marketplaza or Albrook mall.

Around here, you can also look for the few skyscrapers that allow you to get to the top (ask nicely and you’ll find the right one) from which to enjoy a beautiful view over the city!

After some shopping time, make sure to take a taxi for 4$ and head toward Casco Viejo to see the old city center in all its beauty. Here you’ll find plenty of monuments, buildings and more cultural sights to visit, all organised in a nice city route that is often displayed on big boards in most plazas.

With the city line laying at the horizon (check it from the mirador next to the presidential palace) the place might not seem as expensive but be aware that everything within Casco Viejo is strictly touristy, no exceptions !

For those wishing to visit the canal, getting an Uber to the Miraflores Locks might be the easiest and cheapest way of transport. Nowadays, the entrance ticket price for a foreign tourist (this includes views on the canal & museum) is an astounding 15$; alternatively, those looking for a cheaper option to see ships and the famous canal, simply head over to Puente Centenario and for free you’ll have both!

And who wouldn’t like to cool off with a nice beer after a long day of walking ? The Rana Dorada is a pub-like bar which offers a great variety of delicious craft beers at an affordable price, especially during happy hour (house beers 50% off!), and very tasty food but not as a affordable.

Overall, spending a couple of days in the capital exploring the old and new center is not a bad strategy for those looking to relax from the hectic backpacking routine and embrace the pace of the city-life.
