Suchitoto: a unique town

By Connected Horizons

We arrive in Suchitoto from the wildly pessimistic San Salvador and… what a change! The bus drop us off close to the central park, the church of Santa Lucia and even a beautiful local artisan market. Off to a great start! Still with the light in our eyes, we head toward the Posada Blanca Luna, a super cheap hostel just a couple of blocks away from the center. A terrace full of hammocks, lots of tables to relax or sun-bathe and a lovely tiny kitchen equipped with everything you might ever need. Any better? The room, a triple room for us and our friend Lucas, ends up being just 15$ for the three of us altogether. WOW!!!

Once settled down, we go back to the central park to the Info Point where we can gather literally ANY information about Suchitoto and surroundings. Unfortunately, the woman at the desk doesn’t really give us correct information and in fact erroneously tell us that there’s a daily police patrol that guides tourists to the Cascada Los Tercios, found only 1km away from town. In reality though, the patrol doesn’t leave every day but it only goes when there’s enough personnel at the police station which is decided the same day! Although the guided tour there is free, you might be better off doing it yourself: at least you’ll visited it for sure!

The town’s market is very close to the center (well everything is close to the center more or less) and having a walk around is definitely a must-do if you wanna buy some cheap and tasty local food.

If you’re also looking on enjoying some great vies over the River Lempa, make sure to stop by at
Hostal Vista al Lago, it will be worth it! We didn’t stay here to sleep but we passed by to checked a room out and the views from the room’s windows were absolutely gorgeous. During our time here, we also decide to check out the more touristy area of San Juan , the small harbour from where to catch the local ferry to cross to the other side of the river. The place is just a 10-15min walk down a paved road or only 2min by bus from the town center. Amazingly enough, there’s an entrance fee to pay (1.5$ each) to enter this touristy establishment which for apart of a couple of expensive restaurants, doesn’t really have much to offer. Boat trips are also offered from here (10-50$ depending on the length) but going back, we would have gladly saved the entrance fee money for something else.

All in all, if you wanna have a couple of relaxing days in a laid-back setting then don’t miss out on Suchitoto!
