Barcelona is a huge metropolis full of things to do, people to meet, places to visit but most importantly awesome day trips to go on. Whether you’re looking to taste some delicious papas bravas, have a walk down the Ramblas or just relax on the beach, here’s the right place!
After living in the same city for a while and starting to get to know it, anyone would be asking himself/herself: “But what can I do apart from the usual activities I do around the city center?”. No matter if you’re tourist-ing the Catalonian capital for a few days or simply work/study/live here long-term, this is meant to be for everyone. So there we go, here’s the first of the so-called “weekend trips”!
In this article, you’ll discover how beautiful, breathtaking and yet challenging it can be to reach the summit of the Tibidabo and why everyone should absolutely do it!
Views from the top
General Info
The Tibidabo is a mountain (even though its just 512m) which overlooks Barcelona and the surrounding coastline. Most of the people get to the summit not just for the breathtaking views but also to spend a day out at the Tibidabo Amusement Park and/or visit the beautiful Sagrat Cor church.
Nonetheless, not just the final destination counts but also the trip to here. All throughout the mountain there’s a pretty decent network of trails leading in all directions, the best for those looking to get some nature in before getting to the top.
That said you have your own vehicle or not, there are plenty of options to choose from on how to get here.
Getting Here
If you have your own transport, you can either get to the Tibidabo from Sarriá or Sarriá-Saint Gervasi. The first option being the longest but on a main road and the latter being the fastest but on small residential roads. Anyway, remember that the access of Tibidabo is found on the road BV-1418 so in case you’re lost ask for that.
If you don’t have you own transport, you can easily take either a private or public transport to the top of the mountain.
- Direct bus (T2A) from Plaça Catalunya for just 2€ that runs every 15min from 10am takes 30min (the catch is that it works only if the amusement park is open).
- Private shuttle from Plaça Kennedy for 12.70€ that runs every 15min from 10.30am takes 15min (the catch is that it works only if the amusement park is open).
- City Train (S1 or S2) from Plaça Catalunya Train Station for just 2.20€ every 7min from 4am to 12am, headed toward the station Peu de Funicular. Once there you can get the bus 111 to the top of the mountain (1€).
*Update 5/10/19: Currently, the funicular is being renovated so it won’t be available until Autumn 2020.*
- Funicular from Plaça del Dr. Andreu for 7.50€, expensive but scenic, every 15min and operates on a daily basis (in February only weekends).
Just follow the Torre del Collserola in the distance
For casual hikers
In case you’re planning to visit the Tibidabo but also hike and sweat a little for those views, then here’s the perfect plan for you.
Stick to Option C, but once at the station de Per de Funicular just start walking in the direction of Torre del Collserola (there’s a trail on the bottom left before getting to the tower). Once on top, from there there’s another trail that leads to the top of Tibidabo. In total, it shouldn’t take you more than 30min once you hop off the train.
Path to the tower which then becomes the path to the Tibidabo
The trails are well-marked and in case you have doubts or feel lost, just follow the main road which will eventually lead to Tibidabo.
NOTE: Only on the buses you can use a T-1 or T-10 card (also valid for the metro) but for the FCG trains you need to buy a different ticket.
Entrance Fees & Costs
Currently, there’s no entrance fee to access the Tibidabo and enjoy the breathtaking views from atop. Same thing goes for the Sagrat Cor church which is also free. Entrance fees to the amusement park can be found here at the official website.
If you plan visiting, the best way to save money is to bring some snacks and drinks from home since everything in here costs at least double the price of anywhere else. Just consider that a standard beer can be as expensive at 7€!
Nevertheless, at the end of the day, you’ll surely have a great time at the top of the Tibidabo. Feel free to share your experience in the comments!
